Pasta calls for excellent Durum wheat
The seed of improved varieties is the simplest and most efficient way to deliver the results of the research on durum wheat to all the members of the “durum wheat Pasta production chain” and finally to the customer.
To achieve this, in 1989 Produttori Sementi Bologna (PSB), wheat breeders since 1911, and Barilla Alimentare, the world leader in pasta production, joined efforts to develop durum wheat varieties best suited to cultivation in the traditional growing areas characterized by pasta – making quality a significantly improved than ordinary durum wheat varieties.
BARILLA-PSB: 15 years of co-operation
- 1989 First research agreement: development of high quality Durum varieties for Central and Southern Italy.
- 1993 Registration of Zenit variety: first Italian variety with high yellow index.
- 1993 / 94 Implementation of the first chain agreement with cultivation contracts based on a framework of production, cultivation and storage.
- 1996 Registration of Svevo variety.
- 1998 Registration of Baio variety.
- 2002 Registration of Normanno variety
- 2003 Expansion of cultivation contracts in others Mediterranean countries.
Future research Selection of high quality varieties. Selection of drought tolerant varieties. Reduction of Fusarium mycotoxin in harvested grain.
