The main aim of the regional pilot " is to revitalise Emilia-Romagna’s durum wheat production.

To make the Emilia Romagna Region a centre of excellence for the production of quality durum wheat, applying an innovative and exclusive model integrating Agriculture, Industry and the Institutions involved, and to generate and maintain a constant supply of high quality wheat varieties within the region, to compete with imported wheat varieties and fulfill the requirements of Barilla, the regionally-based pasta company: these are the main objectives of the regional pilot project "High quality durum wheat".

The Project, "sponsored" by the Emilia Romagna Region (particularly by the regional councillor responsible for agriculture, Tiberio Rabboni), involves the whole Emilia-Romagna production line for durum wheat: from the seed industry, entirely represented by Società Produttori Sementi of Bologna, to the food production industry, represented by Barilla, to the most important organizations of regional producers.

The framework agreement signed by the participants, besides defining conditions for participation in the Project, also identifies a contractual model based on the qualitative parameters of the grain and on the services provided, and guarantees compliance with cultivation regulations defining the methods and criteria through which the raw material, durum wheat, must be produced and preserved in order to obtain a high quality product for pasta production.

The only varieties of durum wheat contained in the "Set of Regulations for the cultivation and storage of high quality durum Wheat" in the pilot project, which will then constitute the quantity requested by the Barilla pasta industry are NORMANNO, LEVANTE, SARAGOLLA and SVEVO. These varieties have been produced by the Società Produttori Sementi of Bologna as part of the co-operation plan drawn up 18 years ago with Barilla. These varieties were selected because of their high protein content, good gluten quality and the high yellow index of the flour obtained, fully able to comply with the qualitative standards currently required by the food production industry.
