Svevo and Normanno: examples of application to the agro-food industry

PSB Research and Technological Innovation projects have led to the creation of two innovative durum varieties (Svevo and Normanno), in exclusive use by the Barilla group, with a higher yielding and qualitative performance than traditional varieties, and able to satisfy the demands of the whole durum wheat-pasta chain. The use of these varieties represents an example of innovation with strong spin-off in the production system of pasta which has become a symbol of “Made in Italy.”

Svevo was the first variety of widely cultivated durum wheat to be made exclusively for Barilla. Registered in 1996, Svevo has a high protein and high carotenoid pigment contents, with a good and stable yield potentiality. For over ten years Svevo production chain contracts have been made, primarily in central-southern Italy. In recent years more than 5,000 farms have been involved, producing an annual volume of around 150,000 tons.

As well as Svevo, other varieties have been selected for an exclusive use by Barilla, which, because of their excellent qualitative characteristics, have contributed to solving the problems of the food processing industry and to the improvement of the Italian Agro-Industrial System.
The durum wheat Normanno variety is another example. It was registered in 2002, and is distinguished by its high protein content and carotenoid pigments, as well as its excellent gluten quality, making it particularly suitable for the production of pasta. Normanno is cultivated under production chain contracts, primarily in the centre-north of Italy, on around 2,000 farms for an annual total volume of approximately 100,000 tons. Normanno represents the main variety for the Project “High Quality Durum Wheat in the Emilia–Romagna Region”.
